Hoe Common 9 June 2014 Update

Dear Commoners,

Neil Chadwick has cut the bracken on the two scraped areas. There was more than we expected but considering the amount of root still visible after the scraping perhaps it’s not surprising. The good thing is that it had weak stems.

Last week the trenches were cut with the four scythes we bought for the purpose. Again it was noticeable that where it had been cut last Autumn the regrowth was weaker so the plan to keep knocking it back is obviously paying off.

Scything can now be done by anyone who has a spare hour this month or next. Danny and I each have two scythes. We can show you the basics and how to keep the blade sharp.

Dick
